Under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 (2021-2026), the focus on liquid waste management has been significantly strengthened. While large-scale sewage treatment is often covered under the AMRUT scheme, SBM-U 2.0 specially targets cities with less than 1 lakh population for used water management, focusing on faecal sludge and septage management. [1, 2, 3]

Key Aspects of Used Water Management (Up to 500 KLD & Small Scale):

  • Focus Areas: The mission aims to ensure that all wastewater and faecal sludge in smaller cities is safely contained, collected, transported, and treated, preventing pollution of water bodies.
  • Target Population: Targeted towards cities not covered under AMRUT 2.0, which focuses on 500 major cities.
  • Treatment Technologies: ULBs (Urban Local Bodies) are encouraged to adopt proven technologies, such as faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTP) and decentralized sewage treatment plants (DSTP) as per CPHEEO manuals.
  • Components: The approach includes both conventional sewer networks and FSSM (Faecal Sludge and Septage Management) for, but not limited to, capacities such as 500 KLD.
  • Sustainability: Emphasis is on the safe disposal and maximum reuse of treated used water. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
